I got into judging at climbing competitions because of the late John Ellison, the founder of Climbers Against Cancer. I was attending the YCS final being held for the first time in the Edinburgh International Climbing Arena, didn’t have a clue what I was doing, but he assured me it was easy! It must’ve been because, fast forward 23 years, I am about to draw a line under my volunteer judging activities. I can say without fear of contradiction its been an interesting, challenging and hugely rewarding time. I have met some wonderful people along the way, many are now firm friends. I have judged and officiated at every level of competition from local wall events to British, European and World Championships. I don’t know what life will be like without the 93 pages of the IFSC Rule book!

I always tried my best to deliver the best possible event for both competitors and for the army of volunteers, many of whom were recruited using Mr Ellison's technique! To each and every one of them, I am truly grateful for the support. These events don’t happen without volunteers. I hope I leave climbing in a good place and look forward to watching the further development of a wonderful sport.

My very best wishes to everyone, onwards and upwards (just use the right holds!)
