Physical training 1: Learn to train

This workshop is the first of two that are primarily aimed at any coach wishing to further their knowledge of physical training. Whilst most gains for any climber will be found by developing their technique, tactics and mental approach, this workshop addresses how to create performance adaptation through physical training.

In terms of the LTPD model (Long Term Participant Development) covered in FUNdamentals 1, this course moves away from the ‘Fundamentals stage’ onto the ‘Learning to Train stage’. However this course covers the basic information required for a coach to have a fundamental understanding of the science behind, and practical application of, physical training.

The main topics covered are:

  • The demands of the sport & physical attributes
  • An introduction to human biology
  • Training Basics & the ‘Principles of Training’
  • How to train endurance, strength endurance and strength
  • Introduction to core conditioning
  • Application and coaching ideas for delivery at a climbing wall

NB: to be eligible to attend you must be a competent lead belayer and climb F6a comfortably
