Mountaineering Scotland Expedition Bursaries

Mountaineering Scotland administers a grant awarding scheme towards helping those undertaking climbing and mountaineering activities (£4000 is available per annum).

The funds are allocated as grant from sportscotland for sports development across a diversity of climbing activities and disciplines across the world.

Mountaineering Scotland will support these activities:

  • Traditional style ‘expeditions’ whose objective is one of excellence and adventure whether they be first ascents or first free ascents of routes in the greater ranges and little or unexplored mountain areas of the world,
  • Pure rock or pure ice climbs in less remote settings but which are nonetheless worthy of international recognition.
  • Sport climbing and bouldering achievements which are worthy of national or international recognition
  • Competitive climbing at National and International level.

Mountaineering Scotland will encourage young climbers - children from 14 years old are eligible.

2017 applications

We are not taking any bursary applications for 2017. This is currently under review and may be reconsidered in the future.

If you wish any further information about bursaries, contact Kevin Howett at kev@mountaineering.scot.

It is a condition of Mountaineering Scotland grants that anyone receiving a bursary must submit a report after the event. These reports offer a valuable source of information about countries and mountains/crags which can help future visitors. The detailed information about costs and arrangements for expeditions, in particular, are invaluable for first-time travellers.

Summaries and pdf versions of most of the reports are available here. Other reports are available for viewing at the Library in the Mountaineering Scotland Office in Perth. Please contact the office to ensure it will be open when you visit: 01738 493 942.
