Meet the Ready to Rock instructors

The instructors for the Ready to Rock outdoor rock climbing courses for adults and the climbing support for clubs will be members of AMI, the Association of Mountaineering Instructors and will hold either an Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor, or Winter Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor qualification.

Mountaineering and Climbing Instructors are qualified to instruct mountaineering in non-winter conditions including all aspects of rock climbing, both single and multi-pitch, plus hill walking and scrambling.

Winter Mountaineering and Climbing Intructors are qualified to instruct all aspects of mountaineering, both summer and winter, including rock climbing, scrambling and technical snow and ice climbing and winter mountaineering.

Instructors will be based in the area listed, but may arrange courses further afield.

Max has been living in Fort William running Hunter Mountaineering since 2010. He began as a secondary school teacher, but after six years teaching decided to switch full time to the outdoor industry - initially as a teacher of Outdoor Education. He subsequently qualified as a MB leader, canoe & kayak coach, caving instructor, mountain leader and climbing instructor. He has now been working in the outdoors for 25 years, working solely on Mountaineering and Climbing since he moved to Scotland.

"I love climbing and all my holidays and free time are spent climbing or training. My favourite discipline is still summer trad climbing, although you’ll also find me clipping bolts, bouldering and swinging axes. I’ve climbed in both hemispheres, up to 6,400m and had many adventures along the way."

Lena grew up in Germany but moved to Scotland in 2008 and has been living in Fort William for most of her life since. After studying Sports Science and later Outdoor Education at University Lena has been working as an Outdoor and Mountaineering Instructor for most of her life. She fell in love with climbing when she came to Scotland and qualified as an MCI in 2015 and as a WMCI in 2018. She has spent a lot of her professional time working in outdoor education and has introduced countless people to rock climbing and winter mountaineering during her career. Lena has climbed all over Scotland and the UK and also enjoys the occasional sport climbing trip abroad. She loves sharing her passion for anything climbing with those who are new to it all and enjoys helping others on their journey to become independent climbers.

“I am really excited to be part of the Instructor team for the Ready to Rock courses and to deliver the women’s only courses. I am looking forward to meeting and helping those who are looking to get into climbing as well as those who would like to develop their skills or try lead climbing for the first time.”

I started climbing indoors at school and was always interested in getting outside. I joined a university mountaineering club where I finally got out and learnt from peers. I learnt a lot by experience, which is never always the easiest way to progress, but this gave me a passion to help others develop without having to learn to hard way. I started work at local climbing walls and now manage the wall in Stirling where I have established a junior club (Stirling Spiders) and also work with local groups.

I love getting out climbing in summer and winter. Visiting new cliffs and climbing on mountain routes are some of my most memorable and enjoyable days out
