The Be Avalanche Aware e-learning module is a free online resource, which only takes a bit of time, that outlines factoring avalanche hazard into the planning and decision-making processes of your winter mountain adventures. It's great for everyone who enjoys experiencing the mountains in winter.

Day 6: Essential kit for winter mountain adventures ??

Epic winter adventures are even more fun when you are well prepared and have clothing and equipment suitable for the conditions.

If you�re heading out for a short winter hike, you can probably get away with minimal kit, but for longer days it makes sense to be prepared for all eventualities and pack a few extras just in case!

Think about packing for...

?? Safety and comfort

12 Days of Snowledge - Day 1: SNAW!

?? The 12 Days of Snowledge ??

Day 1: Snaw, spitters or smirr? ??

You may have heard terms like �rime�, �graupel� and even �sastrugi� when reading or talking about different types of snow conditions, but did you know that there may be more than 400 snow-related words in the Scots language?! ??

Researchers compiling the Historical Thesaurus of Scots claimed to have found 421 Scots word for snow, from �feefle� (to swirl), �spitters� (small drops or flakes of wind driven rain or snow), �smirr� (a fine rain, drizzle, also of sleet or snow) and �unbrak� (the beginning of a thaw), to the better known and still used �snaw� (snow).

Understanding current snow terminology can be really helpful in understand snow and avalanche reports (like the ones from the Scottish Avalanche Information Service) and conditions you may encounter in the mountains, helping you make the right decisions in your winter planning and route finding.

Day 11: The wonderful world of Snow Patches

A small group of committed �citizen scientists� have been collecting data on snow patches in Scotland�s mountains for centuries. Anecdotal evidence first passed down between generations of gamekeepers and stalkers, before the Scottish Mountaineering Club began their official records in the 1840s. In recent years, we have seen the study of snow patches flourish from a niche interest to mainstream news. What is it about snow patches that garners so much enthusiasm?

@iainjamescameron has researched snow patches in Scotland for the last 25+ years and thinks that the interest stems from an increased awareness of climate change, and its indicators in the 21st century.

�These small patches of snow may lack the headline-grabbing pull of forest fires that swallow up whole neighbourhoods, but they tell a story just as important.�

The Scottish Avalanche Information Service provide daily avalanche forecasts for the main areas in Scotland, as well as an app; Be Avalanche Aware, which has the forecasts as well as tips for planning a great day out.
