Club subscriptions

Mountaineering Scotland has over 140 affiliated hillwalking, climbing and ski-touring clubs across Scotland.

Income from club membership subscriptions is vital to enable us to continue our work representing Scotland's mountaineering community and campaigning to protect access rights and mountain landscapes. Find out more about how clubs can pay their subscription and current costs below.

Our club year runs from 1 April to 31 March.

Club membership fees are paid on annual basis on a per member rate. For the year 1 April 2025-31 March 2026 these are:

  • Adult (18+): £26.75
  • Youth: £16

We require clubs and groups to register all their active members in order to benefit from our club membership and insurance. Prospective members or 'guests' are covered by the club's insurance for up to four meets.

New members of clubs should be registered and paid for within a month of joining the club. They receive a pro-rata reduction on the full year's membership price (see below) if they have never been a member of an affiliated club before, or within the preceeding club year period (1 April to 31 March).

Please note: For new members joining the club with a previous or lapsed membership (from another club or individual), the system will recognise them as an existing member and charge the full membership rate as it recognises that they have previously held membership. Please contact the membership team and we will process these memberships on your behalf.

  • The club membership year begins on 1 April each year and clubs can pay their annual subscription to Mountaineering Scotland between 1 April and 31 December, depending on what works best with the club's own annual subscription cycle. Paying subscriptions within this period is essential to ensure members of clubs are covered by Mountaineering Scotland's club insurance.

  • Club officers can update their club's membership via the Mountaineering Scotland online Members Portal. A guide for club officials can be viewed here, or watch our 'How to' guides on YouTube here.

  • Please ensure we have the most up to date information on committee members so we can provide them with the right access rights to the portal. Payment can be made online, by cheque or over the phone and we can provide an invoice. Contact us if you have any questions.

To fit into the student terms, the university and college club membership year goes from 1 September to 31 August

Membership renewal fees will be requested in September and must be paid by no later than end of December.

The pro-rata rates for new university and college club members for 2024-25 are:

  • £26.75 (autumn/winter term - 1 September to 31 December)
  • £22.75 (winter/spring term - 1 January to 30 April)
  • £18.75 (summer term - 1 May to 31 August)

Download our quick reference guide for student clubs (pdf) or watch our 'How to' videos on YouTube.

  • Some members of clubs are members of more than one club. Others choose to be individual members of Mountaineering Scotland at the same time as holding a club membership. These members do not have to pay the Mountaineering Scotland subscription more than once, unless they wish to.

  • Such members should inform their club(s) of their desire to pay their subscription via one of the clubs, or to pay an individual member upgrade and be linked to the club with no fee.

  • The Club Secretary must then contact us at membership@mountaineering.scot so we can ensure that the correct payment requests are made through our membership database.
