Sofa 2 Summit - learn the basics for hiking in Scotland

Sofa 2 Summit - online learning for hikers in Scotland

Sofa 2 Summit will be taking a break over winter and relaunching again in spring 2022.

If you have already registered and enrolled, you can still take part in the course until the end of 2021 when we will be pressing pause to evaluate your feedback and work on the content for 2022.

Sofa 2 Summit is our online program to help you get the most out of hiking and hill walking this spring and summer. Split up into 7 sections, you will learn the hiking basics through videos, downloads and text, plus a few quizzes to check your understanding on the way.

Here's what we will cover:

  • Why go hiking in Scotland?
  • Planning your hikes and where to find reliable info
  • What to take with you - clothing, footwear and other useful kit
  • Finding the right path (and sticking to it)
  • How to be a responsible hiker
  • What to do if you are lost or injured
  • The natural environment and some of the nature and wildlife you might come across

We would love for you to join us and let us help you get from sofa to summit.

Participation statement

Sofa 2 Summit is created by Mountaineering Scotland, the representative organisation for hill walkers, climbers and mountaineers in Scotland. It is intended to provide information and resources, and is not intended to replace learning with a qualified instructor, nor does it provide any mountaineering qualification.

Mountaineering Scotland recognises that climbing and mountaineering are activities with a danger of personal injury or death. Participants in these activities should be aware of and accept these risks and be responsible for their own actions and involvement.
