The course is designed as an introduction to steeper mountain terrain for those that want to start venturing onto steeper ground, be that off the usual paths and tracks, or who would like the skills and confidence to know what to do if they were to end up on steeper ground by mistake.  This is not an introduction to scrambling course, but may well be a useful stepping stone towards such a course.

Fitness Grade

The course will require a good level of mountain fitness and stiff walking boots, but no prior experience of rough or steep ground is necessary.

By the end of the day those on the course should:

  • Be able to recognise steep ground on the map and on the ground ahead
  • Have gained experience of travelling in all directions in steeper mountain terrain
  • Have skills to cope with rough/steep ground and understand ways of overcoming difficulties
