Ski mountaineering event

Thursday 11th August 2016, 9:06am

The Fifth British Ski Mountaineering Symposium will be held over the weekend of 11 - 13 November at Plas y Brenin, jointly organised by the Eagle Ski Club, Alpine Ski Club and Alpine Club.

The format will be similar to the symposium held there in 2011, with a slight change in that lectures will be held on the Saturday and Sunday mornings and workshop sessions will be held in the afternoons. Overnight accommodation will be available in the centre on Friday and Saturday nights, and a dinner will be held in the centre on the Saturday night - making this be an ideal opportunity to socialise, to meetup with ski touring friends, or to make new contacts.

Lectures include an illustrated account of Simon Christy’s 2016 expedition to Baffin Island, extreme skiing in a remote location, and a talk about how the latest online tools and technology can help with route planning and expeditions.

On a safety angle, there’ll be a talk about recent developments in the science of avalanches and how they can help make journeys safer.

Hannah Burrows-Smith will talk about some great skiable couloirs in the Western Alps which are more accessible than people imagine, while John Hayward will talk about skiing in unusual locations and going beyond the barriers.

There’ll also be a talk by Andy Teasdale on mountain photography, including equipment, ideas, composition and landscape and action photography.

Workshop sessions will include new technology, ski mountaineering First Aid, uphill ski skills, avalanche awareness and other subjects.

Booking details and more information are available on the event website at https://www.eagleskiclub.org.uk/2016-ski-mountaineering-symposium
