New courses: Outdoor bouldering

We're pleased to announce our two new courses - Introduction to outdoor bouldering and Outdoor bouldering sessions. We caught up with Instructor Ben to see what they're about.

"We're really looking forward to rolling out our Ready to Rock Bouldering workshops. With the rise in popularity of bouldering over the last few years, particularly at indoor climbing gyms, it feels like the perfect opportunity to show people where it all began and how to take their climbing outdoors."

Our new one-day course is the perfect first taste of outdoor bouldering. Led by an experienced instructor, it’s ideal if you’ve never climbed before or are curious about making the move from plastic holds to real rock.

"This course is designed to give people a taster of what climbing outside is all about and to help with that sometimes daunting transition from indoors to outdoors. One key aim of this course is to leave climbers with the knowledge, skills and confidence to get the most out of an outdoor bouldering session independently. We'll look at guidebooks and how to find routes; we'll cover essential safety pointers like how and where to place boulder pads (crash pads), how to 'spot' another climber, and how to safely get back down; and we'll offer some coaching tips to help transfer climbing skills and techniques onto real rock."

Looking to explore new crags and meet like-minded climbers? Our Outdoor Bouldering Sessions are designed as a fun, social day out, visiting some of Scotland’s best bouldering spots in the company of other enthusiastic members. With expert coaching on hand, these sessions are a great way to develop your outdoor skills and confidence – whether you’re a regular gym climber or have already dabbled outside.

"This course is aimed at people with a bit of bouldering experience who want to meet other climbers, go to some of the best bouldering venues in the country and learn a few extra tricks to help get the most out of their sessions. We'll offer coaching tips for movement on real rock, as well as expert insights into getting the most out of a sessions including warming up, resting and managing skin! We'll also cover some of the safety essentials like pad placement, spotting and when to go for it or when to back off."

Both courses are open to all Mountaineering Scotland members, cost £55, and include all technical kit (except rock shoes – though don’t worry if you don’t have your own yet).
