Can you help get the International Winter Climbing Meet off the ground?

Thursday 13th June 2024, 9:44am

Organisers of the 2025 Scottish International Winter Climbing Meet are looking for a team of volunteers to support the organisation and running of the meet to be held from 1-8 March 2025.

The meet, which starts and finishes at Glenmore Lodge, is a joint venture between Mountaineering Scotland, the Scottish Mountaineering Club (SMC), The Alpine Club and the BMC, and has been a highlight on the international climbing calendar for over 25 years, attracting climbers from across the world eager to sample the unique Scottish winter experience. Overseas guests are paired up with experienced UK-based hosts and put into teams of 4-6 climbers who will circulate around four club huts, including the CIC hut on Ben Nevis, to allow them to make the most of the climbs and conditions throughout the week.

Volunteers needed!

In order for the meet to run smoothly, the organisers need help from a team of  volunteers to get involved with the organisation of the climbers and climbing teams, transport and travel, and to ensure smooth running of the huts. There are three volunteer roles:

Climbing Hosts – winter climbers with experience of climbing in Scottish winter and be self reliant in the mountains, with good navigational and decision making skills. Hosts must be members of the SMC, Alpine Club or of Mountaineering Scotland, the BMC or an affiliated club to apply.

Climbing Organisers will be responsible for pairing host and guests and creation of teams, organising a program of evening presentations at the huts, supporting guest transport to and from airports and other travel hubs and managing a WhatsApp group for communication with host climbers. This role is ideally suited to people with knowledge of the Scottish Winter Climbing Scene who would like to also participate in the meet as Climbing Hosts and have great organisational and people skills. We are looking for 5 or 6 people for this role.

Hut host volunteers are required for the Raeburn and Lagangarbh huts and for Mill Cottage. The role involves welcoming host and guest climbers to the huts, allocating bed spaces, ensuring food supplies are delivered and distributed and notifying the organising team of any issues arising. No cooking is required as evening catering will be provided.
