Glen Nevis forestry affecting access to Mullach Nan Coirean

Thursday 13th March 2025, 2:45pm

Mountaineering Scotland has been notified of changes to access for members of the public and hill walkers seeking to access the Munros Mullach nan Coirean and Stob Ban via the hill path from Glen Nevis until August 2025.

"After some re-assessment of this operation, we have been forced to implement changes to access for members of the public and more importantly hill walkers seeking to access the Munros Mullach nan Coirean and Stob Ban via the hill path, reached by descending Allt a’ Choire Riabhaich and onto the FLS forest road at NM 1360 6840 and thereafter down to Achriabhach.

The tree felling operation here is hazardous and requires us to employ a winch, extracting felled timber on suspended cables and the base of operation for this equipment will be located on the forest road. The road normally acts as an access/ exit for those accessing the two Munros previously mentioned. In order to keep the public safe from our operations here we have no option other than to close the sections of forest road shaded red on the attached map.

Herris fencing will be erected to prevent unauthorised access while this work is underway, safety information displayed at those controls, and we would ask members of the public to respect these thresholds and avoid putting themselves at risk by breaching these safety barriers.

Recognising this is a popular route for Munro access we will establish a temporary diversion to aid hill goers in their access of these mountains and which is indicated on the attached map running roughly N/NW of the closed area. I have marked this out myself, it is considerably rougher than the forest road and access path to the South normally used for accessing / exiting these Munros ,it is however no worse than sections of ground coming off the Munros.

I would estimate 15-20 mins from the top road onto the bottom forest road using this diversion.

On Monday next week we will clear vegetation on the temporary route and brash trees to define the temporary access and which exits onto the lower forest road avoiding the hazardous operations zone. There will also be signage in place at the start and finish of this temporary hill access route.

We expect this work to be completed by August 25 and do not anticipate weekend operations which is likely the busiest period for hill user groups in this location.

Apologies for any inconvenience these essential forestry operations may cause the public."
