Alpine Club announce new grant to fund mountaineering research

Friday 28th November 2025, 1:00pm

Today, the Alpine Club, the world’s longest-running membership organisation for mountaineers, launched a new grant that will fund original research into mountaineering and the mountain environment.

The Audrey Salkeld Bursary, named in honour of the renowned mountaineering historian, writer and AC member, will provide annual funding of £3,000.

The bursary will facilitate new research into alpinism, mountaineering and the mountain environment and raise awareness of the Alpine Club’s library, archive and heritage collections amongst mountaineers and the wider public.

The bursary is open to academic researchers, writers and other creatives who wish to pursue projects that make use of the Club’s unparallelled mountain heritage collection.

Dr Lina Arthur, Chair of the Bursary Selection Panel said: “The Alpine Club is extremely proud to offer this funding in Audrey’s name. It is a fitting legacy for a remarkable woman that will allow new generations of talented researchers and creatives to undertake invaluable research in our archives, just as Audrey did.

Applications for the 2026 Audrey Salkeld Bursary are now open and will close on 30 December 2025. Awards will be made by 31 January 2026. Funding may be awarded as a single, large Bursary or as several smaller Bursaries, depending on the applications received and the decision of the Selection Panel.

Alongside the financial support, bursary recipients will also receive study space in the Alpine Club Library during normal opening hours and access to heritage team members with specialist knowledge of the collections.

Further details, including application forms, can be found via the Alpine Club website.
