Mountaineering Scotland welcomes this week's announcement of a £40m increase in sports funding for 2026, with £18m directed to sportscotland to help support the operational needs of governing bodies.
This significant uplift follows Mountaineering Scotland's support for the "Running on Empty campaign", which highlighted the financial pressures faced by sports organisations after five years of standstill funding. The increased investment will help us continue delivering the programmes and support that our members and the wider mountaineering community depend on particularly, our ClimbScotland and Mountain Safety activity and our support for our affiliated clubs.
We're also encouraged by the Government's plans for a Summer of Sport, providing children with free access to sport. With major events like Glasgow 2026 and the Tour de France Grand Depart in 2027 on the horizon, this is an exciting time to invest in sport's power to improve health, strengthen communities, and inspire people across Scotland.
This funding boost will help ensure we can continue supporting Scotland's hillwalking, climbing, and mountaineering community at all levels whether you are a recreational hill walker or a competition climber with your sights set on the Olympics.
Mountaineering Scotland's CEO Stuart Younie welcomed the announcement saying "I was delighted to hear Tuesdays announcement from the Cabinet Secretary for Finance, it's a pivotal moment for Scottish sport given the funding constraints the sector has been under for the last few years. It's been great to work closely with my colleagues on the CEO Forum and help support the engagement we have had with government on the campaign and most importantly deliver a successful result for sport in Scotland.
