At the end of 2023, Mountaineering Scotland announced the creation of a Climbing Development Group (CDG), launching in Spring 2024. The new group will have a focus on supporting Scotland’s climbing community by providing a national forum for discussion and debate which will support and influence the work of Mountaineering Scotland and our partner organisations.

With a focus on supporting recreational participation, Mountaineering Scotland works to promote the physical and mental health benefits of taking part in mountaineering disciplines set out in our participation pathway. Mountaineering Scotland also plays a key role on the promotion of mountain safety and representing our members interests in relation to conservation and the environment.

Mountaineering Scotland is the governing body for competitive sport climbing in Scotland (defined as competition climbing). Our activities to support the development of climbing for children and young people are delivered through the ClimbScotland initiative which manages the performance and competition programmes, but also promotes recreational participation and inclusion for both outdoor and indoor climbing, all supported through funding from sportscotland.

As a representative body, we want to improve the way in which we engage with the climbing community in Scotland (in all its various outdoor disciplines) and play a part in helping encourage, support, and facilitate the future evolution of climbing and those who participate in it.

  • Support the creation of opportunities to get involved in climbing.
  • Support the delivery of festivals, meets and other events which promote and celebrate climbing in Scotland.
  • Help make climbing more inclusive and accessible to more people.
  • Support and provide advice and guidance to those new to the climbing community.
  • Connect climbers to the community including the network of clubs and groups.
  • Work with climbers to assist in resolving issues specific to local climbing communities across Scotland.
  • Establish a bolt fund and facilitate and promote the adoption of best practice in bolt maintenance across bolted venues in Scotland.

Mountaineering Scotland recognises the importance of recreational outdoor climbing as part of our history and heritage as a community. We want to improve the way in which we engage with the climbing community in Scotland (in all its various outdoor disciplines) and play a part in helping encourage, support, and facilitate the future evolution of climbing activity and the climbers engaged in it.

As a result, we have set up the specialist Climbing Development Group (CDG) whose purpose is to provide a forum for discussion and debate and provide advice to the staff and board of Mountaineering Scotland and our partner organisations regarding all aspects of recreational climbing, through liaison with the Scottish climbing community.

The CDG will consist of representatives from the following organisations:

- Mountaineering Scotland:

  • CEO
  • Director for ClimbScotland
  • ClimbScotland Development Manager
  • Climbing Development Officer

In addition to representatives from the above organisations, Mountaineering Scotland is currently looking for applicants to take on voluntary roles to set up the CDG. Click on a link below to find out more about each role:

Candidates who wish to put their name forward for any of the above roles are asked to provide a brief summary of their experience in an organisational context and their interests in mountaineering/outdoor/sporting activities, together with a personal statement as to how they feel they could contribute to the work of the Climbing Development Group. These should be sent to: info@mountaineering.scot
