Students to raise cash for mountain rescue for anniversary

Friday 24th February 2017, 11:31am

A student hillwalking club is celebrating its 30th anniversary by raising funds for mountain rescue.

On 11th March Edinburgh University Hillwalking Club is asking all its current and past members – as well as anyone else who wants to take part – to take a summit photo from whatever hill they’re climbing that day.

They can then enter a competition to win a range of prizes – mainly from outdoor shops – in a number of categories, including such as ‘furthest from Edinburgh’ and ‘most epic’.

Event organiser Callum Girdwood, the club’s vice-president, said: “We’ve set up a Just Giving page where people can make a donation to Scottish Mountain Rescue. In the thank-you screen they’ll get a link where they can attach their entries for the competition.

“Club members visit all parts of Scotland, so we decided it would be best to raise money for the overall body Scottish Mountain Rescue rather than try to pick an individual team.”

You can make a donation to Scottish Mountain Rescue at the EUHWC 30th Anniversary Just Giving page.

The 11th March event will form part of the club’s 30th anniversary alumni weekend trip, with at least 50 people expected, comprising members past and present. (A group of alumni in New Zealand have also planned to take part, which gives a clue where the prize for the ‘furthest from Edinburgh’ category might be won.)

Edinburgh University Hillwalking Club grew out of the Edinburgh Rambling Club, a society which was started in 1978. In 1986, the society was renamed to become the Hillwalking Club. Since then, it has been exceptionally popular, with trips in high demand, quickly filled and greatly enjoyed.

Callum said: “Thirty years later, as one of the biggest sports clubs at the university we’re still introducing more and more students from across the world to the joy of hillwalking and winter mountaineering in Scotland!”
