GB Climbing Announce Sponsors for World Cup Event in Edinburgh

Monday 22nd August 2022, 3:09pm

Organisers of the 2022 IFSC Lead and Speed Climbing World Cup to be held in Edinburgh from September 9-11, have announced lead partner SECURit along with Cotswold Outdoor and Serious Climbing as its official event sponsors, with DMM coming on board as a event partner.

The British Mountaineering Council (BMC) which runs GB Climbing, along with Mountaineering Scotland, sold the first wave of tickets for the event – which is to be held at the UK's largest climbing arena, EICA: Ratho in Edinburgh - in less than two hours. The event is supported by City of Edinburgh Council, Edinburgh Leisure, and EventScotland, with a further round of tickets to go on sale from Friday August 26.

The organisers stepped in with less than ten weeks to prepare for and execute the competition, which was originally scheduled in Wujiang, China, but was cancelled earlier this year due to ongoing concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic in the country.

Lorraine Brown, Head of Performance for GB Climbing, said: “Although this event wasn’t something we had in the planning pipeline, it presents an amazing opportunity to engage what is an already growing number of people with our sport, whilst showcasing the incredible talent of the GB climbers.

“Having such forthcoming support from this engaged group of sponsors at extremely short notice is true recognition that Sport Climbing is here to stay on the UK sports scene and we look forward to collaborating and activating with these brands.”

Stuart Younie, Chief Executive Officer, Mountaineering Scotland, said: “This is the first elite-level international climbing event to be held at EICA Ratho since the Lead and Speed European Championships in 2019.

“Combining the very best national and international talent the climbing world has to offer, alongside such an epic venue, its easy to see why tickets have flown off the shelf. We’re grateful to the support of all our event partners – we couldn’t do it without them.”

Rick Cooke, Managing Director of Secur-it, said: “Secur-it is proud to be the lead sponsor of the Edinburgh Lead and Speed World Cup.  It's a sport that's very close to our hearts and we are happy to support both our national squad and now this international event.”

Mark English, Managing Director at Serious Climbing, said: “We are super excited to be involved in bringing an IFSC Lead World Cup to the British Isles.  As the U.K.'s major distributor of the best IFSC climbing hold brands it's really important that we support both our local scene as well as continue to grow with our international partners.

“There is nothing better than showcasing the best holds, macros and volumes, combined with some great route setting, at what will be one of most interesting events this season in the very popular city of Edinburgh”

Emma Wilcox, Partnership Manager at Cotswold Outdoor, said: "Cotswold Outdoor and the BMC have been in partnership for five years, so supporting the climbing world cup felt like the perfect opportunity to enhance our relationship.

“Working together with Snow+Rock and Runners Need, we share passion and expertise for the outdoors, and are brave and bold in our adventures to encourage everyone to feel happier outside. That’s matched by a genuine commitment to sustainability, built around an approach that sets out to minimise environmental impact by helping and encouraging people to buy quality kit that lasts, championing sustainable brands, and offering Repair & Care and Recycle My Gear services that keep kit performing longer and out of landfill.”

David Noddings, Managing Director at DMM, said: “It's brilliant that DMM are able to support and be a part of the IFSC Climbing World Cup at the EICA Ratho. We hope that the climbers, spectators, and everyone else involved has an awesome and inspiring weekend.”

A final release of tickets will be on sale Friday 26 August at 5pm and Mountaineering Scotland members are eligible for a 20% discount off standard prices - all you need is your membership number.

The event will be available to watch online via Eurosport, or you can follow updates on GB Climbing social media channels on FacebookInstagram and Twitter.
