Equality Standard award for Mountaineering Scotland

Monday 20th February 2017, 2:34pm

Mountaineering Scotland has been awarded the Preliminary Level of the Equality Standard.

The Equality Standard is a framework for assisting sports organisations to widen access and reduce inequalities in sport and physical activity from under-represented individuals, groups and communities.

After achieving Foundation Level in 2016, Preliminary Level was confirmed in February 2017 after further assessment.

The assessment particularly acknowledged a number of strengths:

  • Mountaineering Scotland has used the information gained through its equality surveys to identify under-represented groups and to develop their equality action plan, linking this work to wider strategic objectives
  • It has introduced an Equality Working Group to support the delivery of its equality work as well as providing direction and advice relating to specific under-represented groups
  • It recognised the need to modernise the organisation and has worked hard to develop an approach that will build the sport for the future, for example a more friendly and welcoming approach through a redesigned logo and website, as well as ensuring that equality is seen as a way to drive innovation throughout the organisation
  • It has demonstrated clear leadership on equality from the top of the organisation and equality is embedded into the strategic aims and key objectives for 2017-21. As well as a separate strategic aim, equality is evident in each of the other seven aims as strategic direction, key performance indicators, aims and actions. The CEO is the equality lead and there is a Board equality champion.
