Cairngorms exclusion zone update

Thursday 13th August 2026, 8:47am

Update 13 August 2026

More good news from the Cairngorms this week as the remaining roads were reopened, and we would once again like to thank all those who have supported the firefighting effort over the last four weeks. Roads around Nethy bridge are now open, including Lettock and Dorback, however an exclusion zone still exists which will impact on some popular hill walking and cycling routes. This is to ensure public safety due to pockets of remaining deep seated fire and unstable trees, and it is important to follow all signage and guidance from rangers and staff working in the area.

For the latest updates, please check the interactive map showing which paths, trails and car parks are currently open/closed and the full exclusion zone on the Cairngorms National Park website.

  • Areas that are open include Loch Morlich, Lochside, and the Loch Morlich beach, the Hayfield, Sugarbowl and Coire Cas car parks and all facilities at Cairngorm Mountain.
  • Access to the summit of Meall a’ Bhuachaille is possible from the west only, starting from Glenmore Visitor Centre (return the same way).
  • The Coire na Ciste motorhome stopover area and hillwalkers car park are closed.
  • Geal Charn (Dorback) - Currently within the exclusion zone for Abernethy, please avoid.
  • Bynack More – The route via the Ryvoan path is within the exclusion zone and is currently closed to the public. An alternative route exists from the top of the Ptarmigan tow via the Ciste Mhearad path to the Saddle. The exclusion zone is very close to the summit of Bynack More therefore you will need to return by the same route. Please note, this route requires good navigation skills especially in poor visibility.
  • An Lochan Uaine (the Green Lochan) and Ryvoan Bothy – currently within the exclusion zone, please avoid.

Nethy Bridge is open and businesses there are welcoming visitors. All roads are now open with the exception of the Forest Lodge access road in Abernethy Forest. See the interactive map for information on walking/cycling trails that are open/closed in this area.
