The Faces of the Mountain photo competition

Take part in our photography competition for your chance to win an ultralight f-stop Loka camera backpack  worth £230 - as used by Nadir Khan (pictured).

Celebrating the diversity of people that enjoy Scotland’s mountains, we’re looking for feel, expression and attitude over and above technical expertise!

You don't need to be a professional photographer, just capture a moment that sums up being in the mountains with your friends and family.

  • 3rd prize - Mountaineering Scotland winter skills one-day course

What are we looking for?

We are looking inspiring photos of you, your friends,club or family taking part in hillwalking, climbing, mountaineering or snowsport touring at all levels of ability in Scotland's hills, mountains and climbing walls.

Images submitted will be used by Mountaineering Scotland both in print and online for our campaigns, publications and marketing. 

You must obtain consent from any people identifiable in your photos (and permission from parents if under 16). Download a consent form here.

  • Photos must be taken in Scotland in the last 2 years: All entries must be the original work of the entrant and must not infringe the rights of any other party or have been previously published externally (including local/national media or other photo competitions). 
  • Copyright and consent: The entrant must be the sole owner of copyright of all photographs entered and must have obtained permission from any identifiable people featured in the photos or their parents/guardians if children under 16 are featured. 
  • Choosing a winner: 10 images will be shortlisted and one overall winner and two runners up will be chosen by Nadir Khan. The winning entry will receive a F-stop photography bag (name), second place will receive a signed copy of ‘Extreme Scotland’ by Nadir Khan, third place a Mountaineering Scotland winter skills course.
  • Submitting your photos: Entrants can submit up to four photos here along with their name, email address, date taken and the location of the photo.
  • Image size: Entries must be no smaller than 1Mb and no larger than 6Mb. Images of a low file size or resolution may not be large enough to print to display. Images which have been shared over social media may not be of a high enough resolution to print - please submit the original image file where possible.
  • Alterations: If any significant alteration of the image has taken place, please inform us when you make your submission.
  • Use of images: By submitting an entry to the competition you are giving Mountaineering Scotland permission to distribute and use your images for any purpose including online and printed materials and social media for as long as required. No payment will be given for any images used.
  • Legal requirements: Entrants must not have breached any laws when taking their photographs.
  • Employees of Mountaineering Scotland and f-stop are not eligible to enter.


By entering the competition you are agreeing to the above terms and conditions and to participate in publicity about the competition and winners. 

Prizes cannot be exchanged and no cash alternative is available. The judge’s decisions are final.
